Dear Journalists,
Think Washington, DC for travel stories this summer and beyond. Here’s why:
• Headline openings: National Geographic debuts its interactive Museum of Exploration on June 26, featuring a 360-degree view of wildlife from around the globe, iconic photography and cutting-edge outdoor projections. A new museum underneath the Lincoln Memorial will feature galleries, an immersive theater and visitor amenities. The Jefferson Memorial also reveals new exhibits, while the National Air and Space Museum expands with five new galleries on July 1, its 50th anniversary. The Library of Congress welcomes The Source, a new gallery for young researchers. New hotels include the Tempo by Hilton Downtown and CitizenM Georgetown.
• DC is center stage for America’s 250th anniversary. Few places tell America’s story as vividly as DC – the only place to see the Declaration of Independence and the best place to discover its impact on Americans of all cultures. DC250 extends from the National Mall through the city’s neighborhoods. Immerse yourself in local culture and history, taste the melting pot that is America through global cuisine and see an exciting new show, including the world premiere of CrazySexyCool – The TLC Musical at Arena Stage. Maximize value with more than 100 free things to do and more than 30 DC250 hotel offerings.
• A blockbuster summer of free festivals and historic exhibits. The National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, Anacostia Community Museum, MLK Library, Smithsonian Castle, National Museum of Women in the Arts, U.S. Botanic Garden and DAR Museum are among the many cultural institutions unveiling special exhibitions with rare artifacts on view. The International Spy Museum, National Gallery of Art and National Archives also plan free outdoor block parties and festivals, while the Great American State Fair takes over the National Mall June 26-July 10 and the Freedom 250 Grand Prix takes place Aug. 21-23. Over Labor Day weekend, DC JazzFest celebrates America’s next 250 years.
