laurie suggs | Certified Labor Doula (CBI)
My desire for all mothers is to feel they are an active part of the amazing journey of giving birth. Women are empowered as they are able to understand what is happening throughout the process and are supported in the choices they make.
Being very uninformed at my first birth I was left feeling like it was something that just “happened” to me. I felt like the doctor delivered my baby rather than me giving birth to her. During subsequent pregnancies I educated myself about birth and realized how much more rewarding it could be when I had choices based on the knowledge I had gained.
My husband and I have lived in Sacramento since 1995 and raised our six children here. I have a Bachelor's degree in Human Development and loved being a stay at home homeschooling mom. Now that my children are grown and gone I can devote my passions to birth!
In 2014 I became a certified doula through Childbirth International and began volunteering at Sutter Davis Hospital where I am currently a lead mentor doula. I have received additional training from Gena Kirby with the rebozo, and from Gail Tully of Spinning Babies. I am also an Evidence Based Birth® Instructor and a trained Hypnobabies® Doula. Besides volunteering I work with private clients in partnership with Tina Lyon at Seasons of Birth. I have gained valuable experience from the many births I've helped with, and have grown to appreciate what a unique experience each birth is for each woman. My role as a doula is to follow the lead of the birthing family for what is important to them, offer information, and then support them in their choices.
So that's me, but what about you? You're planning to bring a new life into this world and are looking for someone with experience and knowledge to be by your side, to remind you of the innate strength you have, and to encourage you every step of the way. The miracle of birth is something to hold dear. I am always honored to be invited to that intimate time between parents and baby, and look forward to being able to bring a reassuring, calm presence to your birth.
